A busy day for the Peter Jones Livestock team at the National Beef Associations Beef Expo at Darlington Auction Mart on Saturday 28th May. New and existing customers who had travelled from Ireland, Wales, the West Country, Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire and Scotland came on to the stand to chat to Peter and Manon. PJL shared the stand with the Organic Livestock Marketing Co-operative (OLMC) of which Peter is a Director and the Organic Store Cattle Manager. We ran a competition to guess the weight of a group of 29 organic Red Devon stores and this was won by Neil Howie a former vet from Cheshire who attributed his win to his father who regularly weighed his cattle in the 1960’s and obviously passed on this skill of being able to assess the weight of groups of cattle to his son. There were 48 entries and the average weight of the cattle was 502 kgs. Neil has very generously donated the £100 competition prize to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. In the aftermath of the Covid 19 lockdown the turnout and enthusiasm at the Beef Expo is a positive sign for the future of livestock farming.
