Peter Jones Livestock has had a great start to 2021 with one extremely successful month already and February looking to be another one. Temperature might be sub-zero but trade is red hot! Selling both sheep and cattle, both breeding and store, we have really seen the benefits of the current buoyant trade and strong demand. Store cattle see increased demand especially for strong cattle and just as much for stirks and suckle calves. Notably a group of 16 month old Charolais bullocks topped out at just under the £1200 mark for a strong and lengthy group and £1300 for some Blue and Lims, slightly older, many lots between £1000-£1100. TB restricted are seeing as much, if not more demand for strong types. Weaned native calves out of Freisians travelling from Devon to Yorkshire at £370, other restricted and non restricted lots making between £200-350. Freisian steers are a notably strong trade with some achieving £1.70ppk and others at £1.62ppk. A dairy dispersal was also done by David Bostock and keen demand was met. Sheep trade is still strong with border issues and lack of quantity or quality, many lambs over the country exceeding 300+ ssq which is exceptional. We’ve not had so much to do with lambs and ewes since the onset of 2021, although we did have a smart bunch of texels and Charolais inlambers sold to £120 which were well sold for their size and age.
