The numbers of organic store cattle marketed through the Organic Marketing Co-operative Ltd (OLMC) has reached record levels this autumn. Increased numbers have come on to the market earlier than usual from store cattle producers selling stores due to a shortage of forage.
The cattle available are generally speaking in good forward condition and well fleshed. Although summer grazing has been sparse, the good conditions and the high dry matter content of the grass available has (particularly for younger cattle) made growth rates better than the wet summers of recent years.
The cattle that we have marketed this autumn have been in general terms 50kgs heavier than last year when comparing “like with like.” The increased numbers of cattle on the market has put downward pressure on prices this autumn. The slightly lower prices have attracted buyers in to the market place and has meant that we have been able to move the volumes of cattle on the market.
My expectation is that store cattle prices will rise in the spring to last year’s levels by February/March time.
We continue to find homes for TB restricted cattle although marketing calves in small numbers has been a challenge. Reasonable numbers i.e. groups of 20 plus, 400 kg plus cattle have been easier to sell.
Please continue to book your cattle in with us, the more notice we get the better. New suppliers are always of interest to us and we are always available for a no obligation chat at any time
